MG: Tom will be sharing some information with us tonight about Selenium. We will not be making any claims that Vitamark products cure, treat or prevent any diseases. We are simply educating you to the amazing impact that Selenium has on your health.
TM: Selenium is a nutritionally essential trace element that should naturally occur in the soil. Unfortunately, in many areas, Selenium present in the soil has been depleted through fertilizer stress. As a result, most people do not consume enough Selenium in their daily diet. Selenium is essential to proper nutrition and has been shown in many studies to be crucial in maintaining good health.* Selenium deficiency in humans has been linked to a number of diseases.*(1) Consider the facts:
MG: A recent study performed by Dr. Larry Clark at the University of Arizona showed that selenium may reduce the incidence of, and mortality from, cancers in several sites in the body.* When all cancers were studied, the selenium group had a 37% reduction in cancer incidence and a 50% reduction in cancer mortality.* Of the nearly 200 new cases of cancer diagnosed, a group of participants who took 200 micrograms of selenium each day had 63% fewer prostrate cancers, 58% fewer colorectal cancers and 46% fewer lung cancers as compared to a group of participants who did not take selenium.* (2)
TM: A recent study conducted at Harvard University concurred that higher selenium intake may reduce the risk of prostrate cancer.* According to the study, the risk of prostrate cancer for men receiving a daily supplement of 200 micrograms selenium was one third of that for men receiving placebo.* (3)
Researchers at the University of Miami found that HIV-1 infected patients with selenium deficiency were 19.9 times more likely to die of HIV-related causes than those with adequate selenium levels.* (4)
And, Epidemiological studies have shown that persons with low-selenium diets have two to three times greater risk of heart disease than those with selenium rich diets.*(5) A clinical study showed that patients with blockage of all three coronary arteries had low blood selenium levels while those with high blood selenium levels were healthy and free of coronary heart disease.* (6)
And, there is some Arthritis Research that shows Arthritic inflammation is produced by hormone-like compounds called prostaglandins. Selenium helps control these specific prostaglandins by controlling the free-radical damage that stipulates their production.*
MG: We know that Vitamin E is also very helpful to many disease states.*
Natural Vitamin E (d alpha-tocopherol), the form of Vitamin E used in our Vitamin E, Vita-Che, Vita One, Primalux, CellRich, VitaMen and Children's Chewable outperforms synthetic forms (dl alpha-tocopherol) in humans, delivering at least twice the impact, according to studies conducted by Robert Acuff, PhD, Professor and Director, Center for Nutrition Research at East Tennessee State University.*(11-13)
TM: We know that selenium is a partner with Vit E in fighting oxidative stress.* Both Selenium and Vitamin E have their own specific modes of stopping free radicals, plus they have common modes.*(11-13) The two are synergistic, which means that the activity of both together is greater than the sums of the activity of each by itself.(11-13) Our Vitamin E, Vita-Che, Vita One, Primalux, Children's Chewables, CellRich and VitaMen provides Selenium and Vitamin E together to give even a broader base of effectiveness.*
MG: What about selenium toxicity?
TM: Selenium can be toxic at very high doses. This was first observed in animals that eat plants with toxic levels of Selenium. Toxicity in humans is rarely seen. However, toxicity has been reported in parts of the world where dietary Selenium levels are extremely high. The reported symptoms of human toxicity from Selenium have included increased nail and hair brittleness or crumbling, skin rashes, "pins and needles" sensations, irritability, nausea, vomiting, or garlic breath. These side effects were observed in approximately 10% of Chinese subjects consuming a diet with over 1,000 micrograms of Selenium daily. (7) It is interesting to note that the regions of China that have a higher Selenium concentration in the soil enjoy a very low incidence of cancer.*
MG: There is the 'cancer word" again. We don't usually talk about it.
TM: First, I would like to remind you that you can make a limited FDA cancer claim (read about how the claim came about in Jana's Corner, "Health News" section, an article entitled "Selenium: A Star You My Not Knowwhich states: Selenium may reduce the risk of certain cancers.) Again, the disclaimer states: Some scientific evidence suggests that consumption of selenium may reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer. However, the FDA has determined that this evidence is limited and not conclusive.
MG: And, I imagine there are some pretty convincing studies to back up the claims.
TM: I'm glad you brought that up, Meme. It is because of the previous dietary studies(some which we mentioned above) that have demonstrated that selenium has potential cancer-fighting abilities that that claim can be made and that scientists at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium conducted a study to see the effect that selenium would have on bladder cancer.*(9)
MG: What were the parameters of the study?
TM:* The study group consisted of 178 people who had been diagnosed with bladder cancer and 360 healthy people* They analyzed blood samples to find that those who had more than 96 micrograms per liter (mcg/L) of selenium, had a reduced risk of bladder cancer of 70 percent. By comparison, the people who had less than 82.4 mcg/L did not experience the same results* The risk was cut by more than half among those whose selenium levels were between 82.4 and 96 mcg/LThe team reported in the September 2006 issue of the International Journal of Urology, that bladder cancer risk was lowered 14 percent for every 10 mcg/L increase of selenium.*(9)
MG: Sounds like a mineral everyone needs. I understand the U.S. RDA for selenium is 55 mcg for women and 70 mcg for men. You can get both Vit E and Selenium in the VitaMen, Children's Chewable, Primalux, Vita One, Vita-Che, Vit E with Selenium and tonight's free product, CellRich. Selenium is found in most fruits and vegetables, but only when they're grown in soils rich in selenium. In the U.S., selenium is found in high concentrations in the soil of only six states: Utah, Colorado, North and South Dakota, Montana and Wyoming. Bread, fish and meat also deliver some amounts of selenium, but the best source seems to be the Brazil nut which supplies more than 800 mcg of selenium per ounce.
TM: No matter where you get your selenium from,If you could take one easy step to help prevent your greatest fear wouldn't you take it? Would you like to stop living in fear of Cancer?
Well, the results are in and even the FDA can't ignore them...
When the FDA uses the phrase "may reduce the risk of certain cancers," it's nearly impossible to imagine they're talking about anything other than a new costly prescription pill. Because for any substance to get that kind of endorsement it must have...
Dozens of studies performedmany including thousands of patients*
Strong evidence showing it has a significant impact on a life-threatening illness*
A thorough and detailed safety reviewand pass with flying colors*
A body of qualified experts review and give it great marks*
MG: Tom, I am thrilled that this one ingredient has cleared every hurdle with its overwhelming evidence and now this revolutionary mineral is not only available to you, but it's available in several formulas: Vita-Che, Vita One, CellRich, Primalux, Children's Chewable, Coral Calcium and Vitamin E and as a trace element in Limu Plus.
TM: Your body only needs a small amount, but it's extremely important. Selenium supports a healthy thyroid and boosts your natural immune function, but its huge potential comes from its antioxidant power.* That's what led the FDA to say...
"Selenium may reduce the risk of certain cancers. Some scientific evidence suggests that consumption of selenium may reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer. However, the FDA has determined that this evidence is limited and not conclusive."
The FDA's release of this statement is a huge victory for natural medicineand for you and your loved ones! There are several theories as to why selenium may have success in preventing certain cancers, but they all point to selenium being the answer*...
Studies are still in progress to determine if selenium holds all of the answers, but it sure has a lot of them!* And scientists are discovering more and more all the time. Any one of selenium's following weapons could explain its positive effect on cancer protection:*
Selenium can reduce DNA damagea nasty result of most carcinogens*
It impacts genes that are linked to the progression of cancer*
Reduces oxidative stressthe deadly precursor to many cancers*
It's like selenium was made to go toe-to-toe with today's biggest health concern!* It comes from selenium's unique ability to increase glutathione peroxidase activityan enzyme that protects your body from oxidative damage.* You see, oxidative stress has been linked to cancer damage so the theory is that by cutting off its life supportyou cut your risk.*
That particular weapon could have led to the head-turning results published in the Journal of the American Medical Associationa notoriously mainstream publication. The study followed the effects of daily selenium supplementation in 1,312 patients for nearly six-and-a-half years and suggested that selenium may significantly reduce both cancer mortality and total cancer incidence!*
Those are the kinds of results any right-minded doctor will jump for joy over.
This kind of protection is unheard of and has scientists scrambling. In fact, an epic study is underway and includes 35,534 men. It's scheduled to end in 2013, but why wait until then to protect your body? Plenty of results have already shown the promising power of selenium.*(as evidenced by the studies quoted in this dialogue and sources and references)
MG: Thanks for this information tonight. I know that I'm sure glad that I get my selenium in so many of the Vitamark products. Well it 's time to say goodnight, Tommy.
TM: Before we go, I'd like to invite any of you that have been inspired to share your testimonial, to do so at this time.
